Self published children’s book completed - tick

Gulls that Lunch by Gary Cook

It was a bit of a last minute sprint finish but I managed to complete a children’s book before the end of 2020. It was an unusual year and my illustration work kept me sane. After the promise of a couple of projects were delayed, I started planning my own book.

I approached it all wrong and stumbled through a few of the processes but I got an approved book onto Amazon on the 31st December. Objective achieved!

It all started when I was drawing a seagull character for a postcard job and just didn’t stop drawing them. After a while I had some many drawings I thought I could make a story out of these.

I stopped drawing and started writing, I failed English at school, because I had spent too much time in the art department, so writing doesn’t come naturally. Eventually I pieced together a little tale, re-drew most of my sketches to fit and headed off to self publish online.

The story is simple, a group of seagulls discussing lunch. Should they go for proper seagull food or for fast food. My book doesn’t preach about right and wrong food but it does bring up the subject for parents to discuss with children.

At the end of the day, my book wont win any awards, but as an exercise it is complete and I’m happy to be able to say I have it published.
