Exmouth Arts goes Underground
Exmouth is a Victorian seaside town in Devon, at the mouth of a ten mile estuary, it also boasts nearly two miles of sandy beach. It’s an exceptional place because of its history and its location, close to Woodbury Common, the Jurassic Coast and Exeter city, but what makes is so special are the people who choose to call it home.
The London Underground map is recognised as a classic piece of communication design. It’s a clean, precise and easy-to-understand layout. However in deciding to design a Tube map for Exmouth during the first lockdown, I soon realised it was a case of, easier said than done.
It took a few weeks and a few proofing stages to get it right. These early proofs will obviously become collectors items in the future. As time passes I am finding more and more options for different versions of my map, including special editions for local businesses.
At the end of the day it is just a bit of fun. I like the idea of visitors doing double-take and thinking for a second they are close to a tube station. What has been fantastic is the response of local residents who have shown they share my sense of humour with lots of great comments on social media.
Lovely shares and comments on social media
I was reminded recently that when I was a child my mother was responsible for the artwork for our local town street map. In those days the artwork was black lettering stuck on to white card, and with constant updates and amendments, new estates and landmarks over the years, my mothers map becomes a mish-mash of glue and tipex. So for that reason I can say, it’s in my blood to be responsible for a town map.
Mission: To convince the World that Exmouth has an underground system
